Woman's fly fishing day
Comments and pictures from the woman's fly fishing day. We had 10 women students and two woman AAATUers teaching (Margaret C. and Madeline D)

Mike,
Thank you so much! I had a great time, despite the cold (I will note that it is now sunny...grrrr)
Patti :)
Mike,
Just a note of thanks for such a fun time - I really appreciate your organization's willingness to share their expertise and passion for fishing with us "newbies". A free seminar (lunch included) was very generous. I'm looking forward to becoming skilled at fly fishing - I had no idea I had a talent for tying knots!! Your class definitely gave me the jump start I was looking for.
Please keep me on your mailing list for future events.
Best regards,
Trish W
Mike,
Thanks for these photos. I want you to know how much I appreciate AAATU making a class for women possible. I learned alot from you and with the assistance of the many fishing women volunteers we had great personal attention.
The weather was not so cooperative but we are all stalwart women and made the best of it. I am sooooo happy I learned how to tie on my own flies, no fish caught, only the back of my fleece and disappointed that I lost three flies, even with experts checking my tie ons.I guess those are my mistakes of the season so I can move on and enjoy the fishing next time.
Let me know of any events with AAATU fishing so I can join in. I loved meeting the other women members and their interest to have me fish with them anytime, always fish up with those who have more experience.
I love my hat and the lunch was great.
Suzanne
Hi Mike,
If I didn't thank you for Saturday's flyfishing event, I'll thank you again now. It was fun and I appreciated your generous efforts.
Also, the gals who help were great. Could you thank them for me?

what I've been doing the past year
The past year has been busy for the physh ed classes.
I have presented fly fishing workshops at two middle schools as well as a summer camp.
I was able to do a fly tying workshop for a teacher in an elementary school who is doing a special project to teach his fifth graders fly fishing. The students tied a wooly bugger.
Recently we had a "women's fly fishing day" with a dozen women at Gallup Park in Ann Arbor.
here is a web site to the pictures http://picasaweb.google.com/mouradia/WomansFlyfishing?fgl=true&pli=1#

final event of 2007-8

After 9 weeks of practicing on ponds around Ann Arbor the group went "Up North " to Mike's cabin near the Ausable River near Mio. As usual the weather didn't cooperate and there were flood conditions on the river. We visited Bob Linseman's fly shop here he explained what a fly shop does and about the bugs currently hatching. With that info we went to Commin's Fats and huggd the shore while wading. Most everyone caught a fish using a drifted nymph.
To make the trip more autentic we ate pancakes like Hemingway's Nick Adams.

spring session starts april 15
We will begining our sessions with flytying until the fishing picks up. The flies we will tie will be:
- the woolybugger- this fly is a streamer which mimics bait fish, and large nymphs. this is fished by casting down and across the stream, letting it swing down stream then stripping up.
- the hare's ear nymph- a nymph with a bead head, can be used with an indicator or another dry fly.
- The foam ant- this is a terestrial which is fished on the top of the water. this mimics ants and beetles.
- The prime mouradian- This is a good all round dry fly.
Once we have a stash of flies to work with we will begin fishing.
I will be gone the first two weeks of May. so the class will fish independently. In earl June we will take a trip to Mike's cabin and fish the Au Sable and Rifle.

Argo to Gallup park trip

We canoed from Argo Dam to the Gallop park empoundment. This amazing trip runs through the center of Ann Arbor. We were traveling during the 5 o'clock rush but you couldn't hear traffic. It was a perfect fall day with colors. We saw a couple of blue herons, ducks, fish rising and turtles swimming. We are really lucky to live in a city which has created this natural corridor through the urban area. The astonishing thing is we only saw two fishermen on the banks and no one wading. Also I think we were the only ones cameoing at that time.

knots to know

The first set of pictures show a clinch knot. This is the most used knot for fishing . It is used to tie the hook or fly to the line.
this is a great Knot tying site with animations
SURGEON’S KNOT (the last picture) – This makes it easy to join two lines, but one line must be short, since you
have to bring the one end through the formed overhand loop. As with other lines, use a lot of
overlapping line so that you can pull on all four ends to properly pull tight. Work with both lines
together as you tie this, and make sure that both loops are the same size to assure a strong knot.
LOOP KNOTS (middle picture)
Use loop knots to make a loop in the end of a rig to which the line can be tied or to make
two loops for an interconnecting loop system of attaching tackle parts.
SURGEON’S LOOP – This knot is similar to the Surgeon’s Knot for joining lines. To make this,
fold over the tag end of line and form the knot using both strands to make a double overhand knot.
Pull up carefully on both the two ends and the loop. #1
